CREATE is a five-day experience where students entering grades 6-12 can discover and hone their God-given artistic talents in a community that encourages collaboration and fun and equips them to serve the Kingdom. We have seen God do amazing things in the many years of this camp, and we trust He will continue that work this year.
Classes are taught by a combination of Scottsdale Bible Worship and Creative Arts staff and talented leaders in their fields. Each student will choose one of the following tracks to participate in throughout the week.
Audio* – This class offers an overview of audio flow, effects, input devices and mixing techniques to provide the basic ability to mix vocals and bands. Students may get hands-on experience mixing and critiquing mixes.
Creative Writing – Learn the basics of creative writing as well as how to read, study, and interpret Scripture in meaningful and creative ways. Students will trace the narrative arch of well-known Bible stories, study the character development of main characters, and rewrite these stories from the perspective of one of the characters.
Dance – Participants will choreograph and prepare a dance routine to a selected worship song utilizing various styles of dance.
Drama – Students will learn theater and drama techniques in a class setting engaging with other students.
Intro to Drums – This class is for students who have minimal percussion experience. Various drums/percussion instruments will be used in teaching technique and rhythmic interpretation with a short rotation on drum set.
Intro to Guitar – This is a great place to start for anyone interested in learning to play the guitar. We will introduce some basic techniques, music theory, and chord forms. Students will also work toward learning two worship songs throughout the week.
Intro to Keys/Piano – This track is for students new to playing keyboards in a band. They will learn basics of chord reading, how to choose sounds, and ensemble skills.
Lighting* – Learn about lighting instruments and programming the lighting computer as well as the thinking behind how lighting is used in worship settings.
Live Video* – Receive training on cameras, switching, shading, and techniques. Students will learn how to pan, zoom, and tilt, as well as the philosophy behind mixing for worship.
Photography – Learn photography principles through hands-on projects in nature as well as photographing the various camp activities, all with an emphasis on integrating faith and art through photography. Students need to provide their own DSLR camera for the week.
Songwriting – Students will explore and develop their songwriting skills by learning and practicing the fundamentals of lyric, melody, harmony, rhythm, and structure. Their week will culminate in the completion of an original song.
Strings & Wind Ensemble – Students who play in their school band or orchestra are invited to learn ensemble concepts in a variety of musical styles and settings. They will also explore improvisational concepts and opportunities. Participants must have two years’ experience and bring their own instruments.
Video Production for Social Media – Learn the basics of camera operation (exposure, composition, camera movement, audio recording) and video post-production (media management, editing, graphics, sound design). Students will capture CREATE footage using their phone camera and edit short story-driven social media posts. Participants must have their own smartphones with the free Blackmagic Camera and CapCut Video Editor apps downloaded.
Visual Arts – Multiple mediums of art will be used as students complete individual art pieces focusing on the gift of creativity.
Vocals* – Students are taught vocal style, technique, and expression as they learn current worship songs to engage the heart.
Worship Band 1 & 2* – Students who are already proficient on guitars, keyboards, or drums will learn new music and techniques.
We believe the next generation of makers is born out of experiences like these in our students' younger years, and we look forward to seeing God work in their lives!
To ensure we can best teach and facilitate each CREATE track, class sizes are limited and spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis. If you sign up for a class that is full, you may join a waitlist or register for a different class. If and when spots become available, we will start at the beginning of the waitlist and work down as places open up. There will be no refunds after June 9, and there is no walk-up registration.
* Students in these tracks should plan to participate in Scottsdale Bible's worship services on Sunday, June 21.
